The Latest Growth Trends in the Lash Industry

The lash industry has seen substantial growth in recent years, with total revenue from eyelash extensions reaching $270 million in 2018, compared to $124.95 million in 2015 in the US. The industry also recorded a 31% increase in USD and 15% in volume of falsies in 2018. 80% of the top ten eyelash extension brands in the US are owned by two companies, with Ardell Fashion leading the way with $18.6 million in revenue, followed by Kiss Ever EZ Lashes and Salon Perfectly Glamorous.

Despite the waning impact of COVID, economists predict continued growth for the industry, with North America experiencing the highest growth, accounting for 37% of the market. The online lash industry is expected to grow even faster, with a compounded growth rate of 7.1% well into 2025 and beyond.

When it comes to lash technicians, over 25% have 5+ years of experience and 89% are trained in some way. Currently 74% holding a cosmetology or beauty license, 37% of artists have the potential to increase their income by offering additional beauty services, and 74% of technicians carry insurance for their work.

Lash artists face challenges in after-care for clients and fixing mistakes made by other artists. Over 50% of technicians have had to deal with clients with allergic reactions to falsies at least once a year, making allergy-patch tests a crucial step in avoiding this problem.

Salon Spotlight: Chelsea Jamet @ Image Studios Draper

Meet Chelsea Jamet – A stylist that loves being her own boss and has been in the business for over 15 years! Since her start at Image Studios 2 years ago her business has grown into a space of beauty and hair.

So Chelsea, why did you choose Image Studios? – I love being my own boss! Being able to work my own schedule with my clients schedule helps them get a great look all the time. I love having my own space to be creative in a driven environment. Most other business owners can be problems to deal with but I love the creative freedom I have with my business at Image Studios.

Well said! So when did you know this was the career for you? – When I was young I remember going with my mom to get her hair done and watching the stylists every move. I was fascinated with her technique and knew that was the career for me. I even would practice on my dolls!

Then in high school I would cut all my friends hair in my basement, thinking back now though I can’t believe they trusted me! But I guess I was doing good because there were never any catastrophes!

That is hilarious! What would you say is your favorite part about your job? – The people. Ask any of my clients I am a talker and a great listener. I love working directly with people and I love that in my field of work I can just listen and turn some ones crummy day into a great one! My clients are now family to me.

Lastly, what is your beauty philosophy? – Take care of yourself inside and out. I enjoy helping people express their outer beauty and I really think that correlates to a wonderful inner beauty as well.

Meet D Sandoval – A barber who walked into his first barber school class and immediately knew this was the job for him! Years later he owns his own barber business with Image Studios and has a growing business he loves!

So D, how long have you been in the barber business? – After barber school I have been cutting for about 2 years.

And what motivated you to get into this business? – On my first day of walking into The Barber School I immediately pictured myself doing this. It is a fun career that I get to meet new people in every day!

That’s exciting! So what keeps you passionate about your job now? – The thing that keeps me passionate about my career is the connections I get to have with people. I get to meet so many interesting people and hear about their lives. I also enjoy that amazing moment when they look in the mirror and love their haircut. Knowing that they are walking out of my shop feeling more confident is the best feeling.

Meet Ericka Dowsett – Creative and dedicated hair stylist who has been devoted to the beauty industry for over 10 years. Ericka desires to learn and expand her talents while continuing to keep up with the hottest trends.

So Ericka, tell us about the moment you knew that this is something you wanted to do? – Well I have always loved the beauty industry, but I knew this is something I wanted to do when I was younger dressing up my brothers and sisters and doing their makeup. As I got older I started working on friends and grew from there.

And how long have you been at Image Studios? – About 3 and a half years.

Why did you choose Image Studios? – I chose Image Studios because of the environment. I love having my own space where I can express my creativity in a higher end salon! Also being my own boss is pretty great too!

What would you say is your “Beauty Philosophy”? – I believe your hair should be one of your finest assets, it should complement your style and be an expression of your inner self.

What is your favorite thing about your job? – Making women look and feel beautiful and giving them a confidence that radiates from the inside out!

Any awards or accomplishments you want to tell us about? – I believe you must continue to expand your education. So I stay current with the hottest trends by attending Hair & Beauty Showcases, Business Training, Fashion Shows, as well as variety of specialty classes taught by some of the industry’s leading educators. I have had advanced training in Hair Color, Cutting, Texturing, Business Training and Product knowledge.

Meet Pauline Anderson – A passionate master stylist in suite 104 the Fort Union Image Studios. Pauline has been in the hair industry for over 26 years including being a teacher at a local beauty college and serving as a Cosmetology Board Member.

Pauline how long have you been in the industry? – Nearing 27 years.

How long have you wanted to be a hair stylist? – As long as I can remember, I even gave my first long haired doll a haircut!

What would you say is your favorite thing about what you do? – I would say my favorite thing about my job is the industry and the awesome people I get to meet every day. The people I have met throughout my career are some of my closest friends to this day.

Tell us about any awards, accomplishments, or things you are proud of during your career? – Well in addition to working behind the chair for many years, I taught Beauty College, then served as a Cosmetology Board Member. After that I helped create the State Board test for graduating Cosmetologist.

That’s amazing! So how long have you been at Image Studios? – 7 Months.

Why did you choose Image Studios? – It is literally the best choice for stylist. I love the freedom to set my own schedule with clients and I love having control over my own space. I have the chance to create an environment that I can thrive in!

Meet Jess Parkinson – Salt Lake City hairstylist in studio 121 who is making a name and career for herself. She graduated top in her class and won a fantasy competition in 2014 for her hair. She is also a color specialist and a nail artist that is dedicated to each clients beauty.

What’s the name of your business? – It’s called JMarie

How long have you been in the business for? – Coming up on a year!

Tell me about the moment you realized this is what you wanted to do? – Actually growing up my mom was a makeup artist! So I have always had a desire to work in the beauty industry, you could say it’s a part of me. When I was 19 and wondering what direction I wanted to go with my life my friend mentioned I should go with my passion in hair. I jumped right on it and little did I know that I would grow into it and love what I do!

Meet Angela Ortega – An accomplished stylist located in studio 103 Draper. Angela has been in the industry for 21 years and has been running her business (Extend Your Beauty) with Image Studios for about 5 years now. We got the chance to talk with Angela and to learn more about her.

What is your favorite thing about your job? Seeing how excited people get as I transform their hair, it’s a very rewarding career.

When did you realize that this is what you were meant to do? I have always done hair and make-up for my friends whenever they had a school dance or photo shoot. Then one day my friend told me I should sign-up with her to attend beauty school….. she dropped out and I stayed in and loved it!

So why did you choose Image Studios? I love that it’s your own business and you have your own room to decorate how you want. I also really like the location -I’m at the Draper studios because it’s right off the freeway.

How long have you been at Image Studios? I have been with Image Studios for 5yrs.

What is your beauty philosophy? Each and every client is different. Give clients what they want to achieve and everyone’s happy!

Tell us about any awards, accomplishments that you have had with Cosmetology? I have had two photo shoots featured in hair magazine’s and I am one of the top extension specialists In Utah.
